The Ghost Pepper—Bhut Jolokia—has been around for many centuries and is believed to have originated in India. The word Bhut means "ghost" because of how the heat sneaks up on you!
According to the Scoville scale which detects the pepper’s heat according to its capsaicin (yes, the hot part!)—the Ghost Chili measures over 1 million Scoville heat units! In 2007, the Ghost Pepper was certified as the World’s Hottest Chili Pepper in the Guinness Book of World Records.
